Pressed for time? This express version of our eight-day Inca Trail trip cuts through the same amazing Andean landscapes, but with some challenging longer trekking days and pre-dawn starts. Our goal is the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the New Wonders of the World, and we’ll wake early on our visiting day to beat the day trippers from Cuzco. Better yet, we’ll be led by some of the most experienced guides on the trail, who will help unravel the mysteries of the Incas.

Day 1: Start Cuzco; free time to explore the Inca capital
Amid the altiplano hills, Cuzco, the imperial city of the Incas, was the geographic, cultural and political centre of a vast empire which, at its peak, stretched from the Ecuador-Colombia border to Santiago in Chile. After the Spanish conquistadors invaded the city, they built on top of the Inca structures, resulting in unique architecture, and a fusion of Spanish colonial and Inca styles. There will be a welcome briefing in the hotel lobby this afternoon/evening. Remember to take it easy on arrival in Cuzco (and drink plenty of water) to help your body adjust to the altitude (11,155ft/3,400m). Accommodation:  Koyllur Inn (or similar)

Day 2: Free day; optional Sacred Valley excursion
Today is free, allowing you time to explore Cuzco, one of the most beautiful cities in South America. The Plaza de Armas is a fantastic spot for people-watching, and Qorikancha (the Sun Temple) in the Santo Domingo Church and monastery is worth a visit. The Mercado San Pedro is the place to try local produce and there are many handicraft markets to shop for souvenirs such as alpaca jumpers and scarves. Outside the town are more Inca ruins, notably the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, where the Inca armies made their last stand against the conquistadors. Cuzco is also the gateway to the Sacred Valley of the Incas; if you wish to visit, your leader can help organise an excursion, including Pisac Market (optional). If you fancy something more active, there is an array of other optional activities available from Cuzco, including paddleboarding on a lake, mountain biking, or a combination of via ferrata and zip-lining in the Sacred Valley. In the evening, you will need to pack and weigh your duffel bag ready for the Inca Trail tomorrow – remember to keep your passport somewhere accessible for the Inca Trail checkpoint. Accommodation:  Koyllur Inn (or similar)

Day 3: Start Inca Trail trek from Km82; walk along Urubamba River, climb to Huayllabamba
This morning we transfer to the Sacred Vaelly and follow the road to the start of the Inca Trail at Piscacucho, commonly known as Km82.  After greeting our trekking crew, we show our passports at the checkpoint and begin the Inca Trail trek. Today’s route runs alongside the Vilcanota River, beneath the impressive snow-capped Nevado Veronica, passing through cactus gardens and corn fields until we reach the sprawling Inca ruins of Llactapata, where we continue up a side valley to camp near the village of Huayllabamba. Accommodation: Full-service camping: Huayllabamba Camp

Day 4: Cross Dead Woman's Pass, then descend to Pacaymayu
A long climb takes us first through cloud forest to the meadows of Llulluchapampa, then over the Dead Woman's Pass (Warmihuañusca) – at 13,829ft (4,215m) the highest point on the trek. After quite a long, steep descent, we camp in the scenic valley of the Pacaymayu  River. Accommodation: Full-service camping: Pacaymayu Camp

Day 5: Over Runquracay Pass to the ruins of Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca; onto Wiñay Wayna
Today is our longest trek, taking us over the Runquracay Pass (12,894ft/3,930m). From here, the Inca Trail becomes a clearly defined path of flat boulders. As we pass by the ruins of Sayacmarca, we suddenly enter cloud forest; at one point the trail passes through an Inca tunnel on the way past the ruins of Phuyupatamarca and ultimately descends to our final campsite at Wiñay Wayna. Accommodation: Full-service camping: Wiñay Wayna

Day 6: Tour Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate; back to Cuzco
Our final trek starts at 5;30am with flashlights in hand (or on heads) to reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) by 7.30am for our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Please note, Machu Picchu can be shrouded in mist in the early morning as the sun warms the cloud forest. We then descend into the Machu Picchu complex – one of the architectural and engineering marvels of the ancient world and named as one of the New Wonders of the World. The Spaniards never found it; the Incas left no records of it, and so it remained an enigma, a city lost for centuries in the jungle until it was rediscovered in 1911 by American historian Hiram Bingham. Our Machu Picchu visit will be an immersive, educational experience, with our expert guide showing us classic photo opportunities and unforgettable sites. After the tour, we take the afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo (1hr 30min) and continue by private bus to Cuzco (1hr 30min). Accommodation:  Koyllur Inn (or similar)

Day 7: End Cuzco
You’ll begin your return journey home after breakfast. But if you’re not ready for the adventure to end, you can always book onto our Lake Titicaca extension, where you’ll explore the sky-high waters by boat, visit an indigenous community and explore the pre‐Inca site of Sillustani.
